Guinea Pig Mistakes

Adopting from a rescue is difficult and buying a guinea pig from a pet store is fine:
False Adopting from our rescue is not difficult at all. All you need to do is fill out the adoption form and we'll contact you either that day or the next day, guaranteed. However, if you get guinea pigs from a pet store, chances are very high that they will be sick, sexed incorrectly, or pregnant (females only, of course). You should always check your local shelters and/or rescues for guinea pigs.

If I get two guinea pigs then they won't bond with me as well as if I just get one:
False Guinea pigs are herd animals and they are (almost always) better with a buddy. They will still bond with you, but this way, while you're gone ,your guinea pig will have a buddy to play and cuddle with. Also, the cost of two is not much more than the cost of one at all. However, if you get two, please, get either a same-sex pair, or have one or both of them neutered, so you don't end up with babies.

If I have two male guinea pigs they will fight:
False It all depends on the guinea pigs. If they are both territorial, aggressive, adult males, they might fight. However, this is not always true. Sometimes, adult, male guinea pigs can be placed in together with no problems. Male guinea pigs that grow up together can be bonded without ever fighting once, and an adult male and a baby male can form a very tight bond.

Guinea pigs only need their pellets as food, and they'll be fine:
False Though guinea pigs do need their pellets, that shouldn't be the only thing that's fed to them. They should always have Timothy Hay available to them, and should be fed fresh fruits and vegetables daily. They should be fed high-quality greens that is low in calcium, but contains vitamin C, because, like us, guinea pig bodies don't produce it.

Exercise balls and wheels are fun and good exercisers for guinea pigs:
False These are both very bad for guinea pigs. If they are used, they can damage backs, feet, and ankles, which could lead do very painful, difficult, and sometimes even fatal injuries.

Guinea pigs don't need to have their nails trimmed:
False Guinea pigs do need to have their nails trimmed, and should have them trimmed every 4 - 6 weeks. If they grow too long, they can curl and curve into the pads on their feet causing pain and sometimes infection.

Guinea pigs can be housed with rabbits without any problems:
False Guinea pigs and rabbits should never be housed together for many reasons. Guinea pigs need vitamin C or they can get sick, where if rabbits have too much they can get sick. Also, a rabbit has very strong back legs, and if a guinea pig is kicked by a rabbit they can get broken bones, internal bleeding, and it can be fatal sometimes.
