Because in the wild a guinea pig would
be considered prey, they are easily
startled and need careful handling. To pick a guinea pig up, you should begin
talking in a soothing voice just to let him know you are there. You place one
hand under his chest just behind the front legs, and cup your other hand under
his bottom. Once you have a gentle, but firm grip on the guinea pig, you can
lift him. You should immediately pull him close to you chest or lap so he feels
safe and doesn't thrash around, but not too fast so you don't hurt him. Holding
a guinea pig in a towel or something else is always a great idea as well, as
they are less likely to realize they are in the air, and often feel more secure.
