Needed Supplies

(the required supplies to adopt from our rescue, which is located in Atlanta, Georgia, are in bold)

  1. Cage, unless you are planning on letting them have free roam of the house or a room. Guinea pigs can be outside, as long as they are safe in an enclosure, but not during the cold months of the year.

  2. Bedding, carefresh is recommended but using newspapers, shredded paper, and aspen is alright. NEVER use pine or cedar bedding as it is bad for a guinea pig's respiratory system..

  3. Dry, fresh hay. When choosing hay, Timothy hay is recommended, but alfalfa hay is alright for pregnant guinea pigs or guinea pigs under a year old.

  4. Some chews for their teeth, because they are rodents, their teeth are always growing so they need something to chew on to keep them healthy and painless.

  5. Houses to hide in, wooden houses are good because then guinea pigs can both go in it to feel safe, and chew on them. You can also get pigloos, a plastic hiding house, from many pet stores.

  6. A food bowl that won't tip over easily from guinea pigs pushing and standing on it.

  7. Food, at nearly every pet store, and some other stores, there's guinea pig food. Fruits, vegetables, and hay should also be given to your guinea pig(s)

  8. A water bottle that should always be full with clean water.

  9. Cardboard boxes and tubes to play with, chew, go on, in, and through.

  10. Toys, guinea pigs can get bored so having toys and something for them to do is always good. However, wheels and the balls they can roll around in are bad for their backs and should not be used.

  11. Buddy, a guinea pig should never be alone. You may be prepared to spend half of the day playing, but when you're not there, a guinea pig needs somebody to cuddle and play with. If you are planning to adopt a guinea pig, you must already have a friend, or be adopting more than one.

*Supplies are available at the rescue, and prices vary depending on the item*
